As 2024 draws to a close, it’s the perfect time to reflect. I find myself thinking about our new vision at Statistics Without Borders and what our role is in making it a reality. Statistics Without Borders envisions a world in which communities everywhere are empowered with statistical and related expertise to make data-driven decisions that advance humanity. Think for a moment: What would our world look like if we achieved that vision? What progress would be made on the challenging problems facing our planet if communities made better decisions supported by data? For me, I think it looks like healthier, happier humans around the world: People who have consistent access to water, safe food, shelter, and energy. Women and children who have more pathways to economic stability. Communities who live longer because of a cleaner environment and tools to eradicate disease. …

In Brief: Statistics Without Borders is seeking volunteers for project 254, 2024 UNILAG Data Science Boot Camp, which is being conducted for the Statistics Department at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). In 2023 SWB assisted UNILAG in the development of a Data Science curriculum and the production of a two-week Data Science Bootcamp. The goal of project 254 is to aid UNILAG in the production of a two-week training course in Data Science to be given August 19-30, 2024. Specifically the goal is to secure volunteer webinar speakers and tutors for the two-week course, to produce hands-on exercises for the training course participants, to train the tutors to guide the Bootcamp participants through the exercises, and to present the webinars and exercises during the Bootcamp.
